IPIHAN is an art project in which the artist collective use derelict premises as studio, presentation and meeting space for 5 weeks. A few weeks ago IPIHAN landed in Idrija in Slovenia, around the former Joseph’s Shaft of the Idrija Mercury Mine.
The Joseph’s Shaft is the most important shaft for transporting materials and miners, which connected all 15 levels of the more then 700 km of tunnels. It was built in 1786. Mining started here as early as 1490; the mine has been shut down since the 1980's, and is a Unesco world heritage site since 2012.
Most of the shafts and other mining buildings form a museum, but until now the Joseph’s Shaft is left untouched.
This years participants are: Pim Palsgraaf Willem Besselink, Regina Kelaita, Guus Vreeburg, Esther Kokmeijer, Maurice Bogaert, Judy van Luyk, Lieve van den Bijgaart, Maruša Štibelj and Anneroos van Veen.
BIEN 2025 is collaborating with IPIHAN on this years edition with Idrija Municipality as a partner. The event is part of GO!2025, European capital of Culture.
