The artworks of Lara Banovac are inspired by five narratives of creation as described by philosophies and religions around the world. Textile paintings are connected with the ideas of Christianity, Islam, Chinese Taoism, Japanese Shintoism and Buddhism. Motives, symbolism and emotional impressions are drawn from the narratives
It all starts when the creator creates the world. The first matter is born and recognizable impressions are created from the abstract. The breakthrough into the material world and the process of weaving reality involves the first textile painting “The Weaver of Light” and is consistent with Christian genesis. The fragility and ephemerality of the garden is told in another painting, “The Fragility of the Garden of Eden,” according to the Islamic account of the exile of Adam. When man is seduced into temptation, he must leave the fold of the garden and live on earth. The beginning of the earth is told by the Daoist myth and the third textile painting “Pan Gu”, where light and heavy energy separate. In Shinto myth, the deities from the floating bridge mix the flowing mass of the ocean and shape the world. This narrative is the starting point of the fourth painting “The Floating Bridge”. When the earth finally takes shape, it is inhabited by a man who is young and naive.
