The two-day symposium of the BIEN Textile Art Biennial presents practices and authors working in the field of textiles. The first day of the symposium presents topics from the field of textile heritage, and the second day focuses on sustainable approaches in textiles, namely in practice and research. It is primarily intended for students of textiles, clothing and interior design. With a wide range of topics from the field of heritage, history, entrepreneurship, sustainability and good practices from Slovenia and abroad, also addresses a wider audience. With the exception of the last two presentations, the first day of the symposium will be held in English, and the second day will be entirely in Slovene.

We will meet the creators of the Biennial of the Western Balkans, which is dedicated to the textile heritage of Greece and neighboring countries. Chiara Bonfiglioli will present her book on the rise and fall of the textile industry in the Balkans from 2019, and the Berlin artist Jan Bejšovec will present his research of the East German socialist fabrics. Symposium will also focus on domestic practices. Darja Rant will present textile prints from the Sitarjevec lithium mine, interdisciplinary researchers Mateja Golež, Marija Jenko and Anja Jerčič Jakob will present the project Depth of Layers, which is also presented at the BIEN 2021 biennial and explores the paintings of painter Leopold Layer. The first day will end with Urška Mihevc from Heritage Lab, an incubation program that develops the potentials of local cultural heritage.

The second day of the symposium is dedicated to sustainable approaches. We will meet creators, artists and entrepreneurs Darja Malešič, Mateja Benedetti and her brand Benedetti Life, Andreja Špegel, Nina Vaslt and Maja Modrijan with her brand Destilator. In the first part, the presentations will focus on examples that use sustainable approaches in their practice. We will continue with examples from the research, Bojana Vončina will present activities in the field of textile recycling, Marija Gorjanc sustainable dyeing of textiles, and Tatjana Rijavec will present the path from food industry waste and waste plastics to high fashion.
