The Cult of the Sun in Dynamic Cones Made of Raffia

The artwork The Witnesses / Die Zeugen consists of twelve cone-shaped objects made of raffia. The unruly nature of the material gives the objects vitality and dynamism, making them appear as if they are growing from the ground. The inspiration for the artwork is the Berlin Gold Hat, an artefact from the Late Bronze Age made of thin gold leaf, presumably used for religious rituals. It is believed that the gold hats served as insignia of deities in the context of a widespread sun cult in Central Europe at that time. They are also thought to have had an astronomical function, with many interpretations suggesting that the symbols on them can be read as a lunisolar calendar. The form of the artefact is present in world cultural history, just as the material used can be found in nature.
