Monkey Suit refers to the urban slang for the uniform we wear daily in the workplace. The uniform can be understood as both a formal attire and a disguise that conceals an individual’s identity. We are forced to wear it, even if we don’t want to. For the performance, the author put on a unique monkey suit uniform, which was intended to protect her from the judgment of others in public spaces. Paradoxically, this attracted even more questioning looks, but she maintained her anonymity and thus shed the burden of potential social criticism. Through this social experiment, the author brings to the forefront the idea of self that questions social norms, as well as the concepts of difference and acceptability in relation to society.
