Marko Pogačnik graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1967. He was a founding member of the OHO movement and, in the 1970s, an initiator of the commune in the village of Šempas in the Slovenian Littoral. He designed the Slovenian national coat of arms. His practice focuses on land art and the healing of the Earth through his own method, which he calls lithopuncture.
In 2019, Pogačnik donated his dream drawings to the Kranj and Gorenjska region’s bid book for the European Capital of Culture 2025. Although the bid was unsuccessful, the title was awarded to Nova Gorica and Gorizia, where BIEN was later invited to participate as part of the official programme. A conversation held at the closing event of the biennial in the Lantieri Palace symbolically concluded the BIEN trilogy Sava–Sun–Air.
