The ethereal quality of the air

Leonie Burkhardt is a textile designer and researcher who is passionate about exploring the craft of weaving and pushing its limits. She works at the boundary of textile and object. She currently researches as a PhD student the possibilities and applications of three-dimensional weaving in relation to our social living environments at the Swedish School of Textiles. Dark bend is a 3D-woven textile sculpture that embodies the ethereal quality of air. Once woven flat, the textile transforms into a three-dimensional textile sculpture through heat. Each woven layer expands, and air is trapped between them, creating a dialogue between structure and void. The negative spaces within the sculpture are as crucial as the woven fibers themselves; they allow light to penetrate and dance, accentuating the sculpture’s delicate contours.
