No-Border Craft is a self-organized group of asylum seekers, refugee women, and activists who "crochet together and connect beyond borders." Their crochet gatherings began and continue in collaboration with the informal craft collective KvaKvačkaš. The group's core mission is to build social networks between local women and migrants while striving to empower and amplify the skills, experiences, and resilience of migrant women.
Actively seeking opportunities for alternative economies, recognition, and knowledge exchange among migrant women, they have chosen to offer their handmade products in exchange for voluntary contributions on various occasions. The creators of these works and participants in the workshops are asylum seekers, migrant women living in Ljubljana, and activists.
In the No-Border Craft collective, traditional craftsmanship is interwoven with social engagement. By exchanging handcraft skills among women from different countries, they create a social network that fosters solidarity and support. The sharing of knowledge and skills in knitting and crocheting is also a way to help migrant women find their place in society.
BIEN Workshop: The Power of the Red-Green Fruit
This workshop offers participants the opportunity to crochet watermelons—a symbol of community and life force—while experiencing the spirit of this culturally diverse crochet collective. Through simple crochet techniques, the session will explore the significance of handcraft as a means of belonging, empowerment, and visibility in public spaces.
