In the age of digital money, paying is like breathing: both are performed with little effort or consciousness, and no physical evidence of having transpired. Paper receipts are the exception to this parallel- ironically, because they are most frequently left, forgotten, or discarded. Paragon seeks to silence the noise of transaction, so that, like focusing on one’s breath in order to quiet the noise of the mind, the viewer may focus on the materiality, that is, the truth of the object. Sam J Gardner is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice combines found objects with an intuitive process to explore themes of waste, materiality and collapse. He studied printmaking at the Contemporary Workshop of Graphic Arts (TAGA) in Oaxaca, Mexico, and now lives and works in Poznań, Poland.
