Icarus – A Journey in Search of the Sun (2020-2023)

Cene Avguštin Gallery, ZVKDS, Tomšičeva ulica 7
Each piece is an opportunity to explore nuances of Ícaro’s journey

“I invite you to experience the sensation of flying high like the legendary character from Greek mythology who dared to fly towards the sun, now through the intricate and beautiful universe of my tapestries. The Ícaro exhibition is a celebration of the search for freedom, dream, and adventure, not only through the artistic medium I use, tapestry, but also through the adventure of reaching Kranj, passing through many cities and accompanied by the sun. Each piece is an opportunity to explore nuances of Ícaro’s journey, from the initial impulse to the sublime moment of reaching the sky. In this exhibition, you will find tapestries that were created for you to feel the joy and challenge of flying. Each one carefully selected to depict the journey of man in search of the sun, its achievements and challenges. Ícaro is a symbolic figure for all those who have a burning desire to achieve the impossible. His wings may have melted, but his courage and passion for adventure continue to live on in us.”

Susana Cereja is a multidisciplinary artist focused on the renovation and development of age-old methods of artistic production. Woodcut, polychrome plaster and the Arraiolos stitch, an ancient Portuguese technique dating back to the 16th century, are some of the methods that have been restored to the realm of contemporary art, returning it to the place of excellence it once held in Portuguese culture. Cereja’s creative process is dominated by research, diversity and versatility of means. Cereja is dedicating one of her works to the SUN. The finalization of the work was done at her BIEN 2023 textile art residency.
