Petja Kolenko (1994) is a visual artist and art teacher who lives and creates in her native Ljutomer. Petja’s artistic expression is characterised by the reuse and recycling of various waste materials, which she processes in various techniques, most often with collage. She draws ideas for the motifs of her works from the lyrics of popular songs, the content of which she artistically translates as a literal illustration or depicts based on her personal experience. She intimately identifies with the selected pieces of music, which she describes visually. Through them, she communicates with her surroundings, and expresses her physical and emotional states. Her stylistically diverse works deal with many environmental and social issues in a motivic manner and raise the issue of women’s role in society. The stylistic combination of comics, street and contemporary art form her specific artistic language, characterised by the depiction of scenes of urban culture and the symbolic aesthetics of selected musical genres. The work She’s lost control was created by Petja in September 2023 at the Womcom – Women Power in Comics residency in Hungary. It is based on the song of the same name by the English post punk band Joy Division. She’s lost control is a self-portrait in comic book format that tells the story of losing control over one’s own mind and body. It is an intimate confession about the struggle with dark states of mind that appear in the form of anxiety, depression, fears and shame, but at the same time about recognition, acceptance, transformation and healing.
