Pamela Whitaker: Stitching Together: Mobilising Textile Communities for Creative Health

At the event, we will discuss training, ethics, supervision and health services which include cultural prescriptions and community textile practices within healthcare. What are the connections and distinctions between socially engaged artists, art therapists, creative health practitioners and arts and health providers? This will be a lively conversation aimed at supporting the development of health promotion through textile communities within Slovenia as an asset for mobilising quality of life indicators—with guest speaker Pamela Whitaker (Ireland), alongside representatives of textile communities and the Culture for Mental Health consortium.

Pamela Whitaker is a lecturer in art psychotherapy at the Belfast School of Art, Ulster University. She has recently co-authored an article with Lorna Dillon and Érika Silva titled Textile pedagogies: Stitching as reflective practice in the Journal for Applied Arts and Health, which highlights the conflict textiles collection at Ulster University. This collection of textiles, (produced in contexts of war, social injustice and adversity) was a focus for her curatorial contributions to the Stitching Solidarity: Activism in Textile Art symposium at Ulster University. She is a creative health researcher identifying community assets for mental health promotion, particularly in cultural, civic and natural environments.

Friday, 30 May16.00Meeting point: Main Square in Kranj, by the fountain
Friday, 30 May18.00Streets of Kranj

The performance begins at Vovk Garden and ends in the Kokra Canyon.

The movement-sound event Young Flock evolves from previous projects: Flock of Experienced Birds Kranj, Flock of the Experienced Škofja Loka, and Flock of Books Celje, which enabled older adults to co-create contemporary art events within safe, temporary, and supportive communities. Each flock placed its artistic experience in a specific context: Kranj in the old town, Škofja Loka in a museum setting, and Celje in a library.

This time, a new, travelling performance takes flight through Kranj, co-created by young dancers. Using the methodology of the previous flocks, they developed movement material and text grounded in new experiences—creating a space for transmitting intangible cultural heritage and building new urban rhythms.

In line with Andrew Hewitt’s idea that choreography is also a social practice embodying ideologies and relationships, Young Flock places young people in the role of active co-creators of coexistence: through movement, they not only inherit the knowledge of past generations but creatively transform it—with the rhythm, dynamics, and perspective of the present moment.

Join the YOUNG FLOCK and experience an urban choreography that breathes with the pulse of the present!

Nika Batista (SI): Principles of the Unseen

Performative walk, premiere

Principles of the Unseen is a performative walk through the park, among fluttering layers of textile transparency and fading hopes.

I drag and wrap myself in the wind, binding and layering myself with memories. With the air that seeps through every thread and every blade of grass in the Rafut Park. Thoughts and decaying memories layer with each step along the path.

Nika Batista (b. 1991) is an intermedia artist working between performance, textiles, the body, and the visualisation of emotions. Her work continually seeks a subtle harmony between what is felt and what is visualised. At the centre of her expression is the human being in their full emotional existence. Her work expands beyond conceptual and physical boundaries with an undertone of ephemerality.

Thanks: Velana

Before the walk, at 11 AM in Rafut Park, there will be a concert by the chamber ensemble NOVA, presenting a programme of well-known classical and popular songs. Location: in the park’s amphitheatre.

Material Flow Project is a participatory and processual work. We join our collections of materials and turn out the use of gallery space. We consciously decided to reach out and strengthen skills such as – collaboration and synergy. We offer the audience experience with various materials and give them the opportunity to be a part of artwork. We create this project as a moment of conviviality, a place to encounter. Openwork offers the audience to interpret artwork. Our principles are recycling, upcycling. Our process of building an artwork is more democratic.
