We are complex human beings who often protect our emotions from the scrutiny of others to gain acceptance. Some feelings are more socially acceptable than others, and to be part of society, we must conform to certain standards of appearance and behaviour. We must adhere to specific routines, engage in typical conversations, and follow established customs. In essence, we must assimilate to be part of the collective. The smiley face symbolises the smile we are expected to wear daily to be accepted.
